Employee health and safety is one of the biggest global problems hiding in plain sight. Workplace accidents account for 4% of deaths around the world every year, but at a time of growing consumer consciousness, it’s barely discussed.
Every day, there are millions of cases of missing protective equipment, bad ergonomics, machinery malfunctions or misuse, along with the kinds of structural collapses we associate with the Industrial Revolution.
At Air Street, we believe in supporting mission-driven entrepreneurs, tackling real-world challenges, no matter how unglamorous they might appear.
That’s why we’re delighted our friends at Intenseye have raised a $64 million Series B, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Air Street, alongside Insight Partners, and Point Nine.
I first met Sercan, Intenseye’s Co-Founder and CEO, in 2019, a few months after he started the business. I was immediately impressed by his sense of focus and mission. While touring various industrial facilities, he had expected automation and robotics to have become the norm. Instead, he was horrified to see scores of safety hazards while inspectors walked around with clipboards to manually fill in paper forms.
Back then, the most popular computer vision applications were new Snapchat filters or gimmicky apps that helped you imagine what you might look like when you were older. While some people saw the possibility of bunny ears, Sercan saw the potential of computer vision to detect safety hazards, support real-time alerting, and provide valuable data to improve safety protocols over time. The Intenseye team combined this vision with a powerful drive and a clinical understanding of everything from facility operations through to the workflow of employee health and safety teams.
Since we co-led Intenseye’s seed round, the company has gone on to expand across 30 industries in 25 countries. Their technology is used everywhere from roadworks through to textiles manufacturing and the bottling of Coca-Cola.
In 2023 alone, 36.5 million unsafe acts or workplace conditions were detected by their platform. As a result of their technology, there are 100,000 workers less likely to suffer from immediate accidents or chronic health problems.
Their success is proof of AI’s power beyond the walls of big tech companies or the trading floors of investment banks. It shows the potential of technology to drive material improvements for everyone.
We’re proud to support the Intenseye team as they enter this new chapter.
